I started the bike up today, and gave it a quick little blip and noticed gas coming out of the breather tube. Took the cover and filter off, and noticed there was a bunch of fuel in my airbox. Is this a float issue? I am still in the process of shimming my valves, so the carbs really haven't been touched yet.

stuck float and bad petcock if you had it on anything but prime.

    Thanks.
I had it on res. it doesn't seem to leak when it's Off the bike in that position. Give it the ole suction test I guess?

Suction test indeed, and yeah--that's a float/float needle issue almost certainly.

So the petcock is definetely a little leaky. But I pulled the carbs off and noticed I had 2 bent diaphragm needles. What kind of weirdness would this cause?

Even with a leaky PC if your float needles are seating properly you won't have overflow going to the crankcase. Your carbs are going to need an kit.

Are you sure they're bent? They ARE spring-loaded to one side so they won't "hang" perfectly straight from the slides.

Petcock issues only ENABLE a float problem. The floats are what are supposed to control fuel flow, not the petcock.

Yeah. I would say its more cocked than bent. To the point I would have to guide them into the emulsion tube.

    That's OK.

I'd be more concerned about the two that aren't "cocked." Gummed in place?

But this also has nothing to do with the floats.

The other two are cocked, just not as dramatically. I pulled the needles out and cleaned them.

Would not having a gas cap make the petcock leak?

No, the gas cap is vented, anyway.

Having a worn petcock is what makes the petcock leak.

You're gonna hafta drain the oil and replace it and the filter.

NOW BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE PETCOCK............

Here's a quick temp fix...... get a briggs and stratton (or any other brand you want) lawn mower/snowblower/etc..... fuel line shutoff valve. Install it between the petcock and the carbs.

Make sure you remember to turn it ON when you get ready to start the bike, or you'll end up stalling in about a mile. Make sure you remember to turn it off when you shut the bike off, or you will end up right back where you are right now.

Again, that's a temporary solution. The permanent solution is to rebuild the petcock this coming winter.

So, I pulled the carbs and gave em a decent Cleaning. Not the full tear down. I noticed number three was pissing fuel when I started to wet set the floats. Adjusted the tang, and got everything set to around 3mm using the clear tube.

I put the carbs back on the bike and it started right up, and idled, but would die when I pulled the throttle. I noticed my idle was low, and adjusted the speed. Brought it up to around 1050. Now i have to choke it a little bit, rev it once, then turn off the enrichment. After that, the tach goes up, with the occasional hesitation, and then drops right down when I release the throttle.

Will the hesitation go away with a proper
    Running sync?
