gas spewing outta the airbox

    My friend has an 81 xj550 maxim...
    It is spewing gas outta the airbox, he cleaned the carbs, they look brand new inside. He can ride it and no gas but once he stops and it sits at an idol it starts.

    ANY IDEAS?

    You've got one of two options:

    1 - the tank is leaking at the very back making it look like it's coming from the airbox.... not tremendously likely

    2 - carbs aren't clean enough yet -- he's got a stuck float in one of the carbs, fuel backs up into the throats then backflows into the airbox.

    Most definately! Also , If it leaks with the motor not running, the petcock will also need attention!

    Furthermore, its quite possible the oil is now diluted with petrol and should be changed before starting the bike again (after the above is sorted of course)
