My 650 Maxim has the problem of an occasional crunch while upshifting. Most of the time going from 1st to 2nd, but sometimes in other places. That but shifting into 1st from neutral can be pretty rough. It includes the loud sounds of gear engagement and a sort of a forward jolt, not enough to make the bike move however.

I've adjusted my clutch a few times thinking that maybe the clutch is not fully disengaged when I pull the handle in. I've adjusted it about as far as I can while still allowing a little free play in the handle. So as not to have and pressure in the clutch when the handle is released.

Strangely enough there is absolutely no problem downshifting and it is always smooth as silk.

I find a good firm upwards motion on the shifter helps reduce it but not always. Also, making damn sure the engine is at the right RPM for the next gear helps to. This however requires what I feel is an unnecessarily long pause between 1st and 2nd gear.

    Is this just normal?

If not then the only explanation I could think of is that the clutch is not completely disengaged when the lever is pulled in. However I don't believe there is anything more I can do about that through clutch adjustment.

I don't have this on upshifts, but every once in a while going from neutral to 1st I get a little crunch and small lurch feeling, but it isn't often. Try holding the clutch in a little and hold the rear brake when you shift into first to ensure the gear shaft is not spinning at all when you put it in gear. This works for me.

Problem solved. I changed my oil today, and went heavier. I was running 10-40 before and now I'm running 20-50. As I understand the engine oil also lubes the transmission. Well now she shifts smooth as silk compared to how it was before. The oil that came out didn't look to healthy and the magnet on the drain plug was covered in a ball of sludge. Perhaps another oil change will be in order in a rather short time to make sure she's really cleaned out. I'm just glad its going ok.
