so ima get my self a new set of exhaust here in a couple of weeks when i get my tax return back (woot!) how many jet sizes do you think i should go up to, 2? and whats jets all need to be replaced on our carbs when doing an exhaust upgrade?

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-XJ-650-7 ... e4&vxp=mtr

cant decide if i want to do black headers or chrome yet :(

edit - i will most likly have that baffle OUT most of the time but we shall see whats shes like. also what is the difference between megaphone and canister mufflers?

The kerker megaphone i had came with a very small un restrictive race baffle , and a slide in street baffle . both packed with fire resistant wrap .Not sure you can change the canister one .the megaphone one is just that the pipe enlarges as it gets to tail end . The canister one is a small set of pipes with a big canister on the end Like one of these kids with a big muffler on a rice burner car!! lol

Looks nice in black IMO :)

As you know, jetting's a guess (at best a guesstimate) when fitting a 4-1 but 2 or 3 on the main fuel jet's a start & it's possible the pilot jet would need to go up as well but I'm not going to risk going any further than to say "you may need to re jet" lol :?

The difference between meggas and canisters is mainly the shape, meggas taper out towards the end. This also affects the exhaust characteristics too depending on size/length (think first half of a 2-stroke expansion chamber) but again impossible to say how exactly it'd differ to stock without testing it on the bike...

I like the look of the one pictured FWIW

yea i think ima go with canister style, more of a superbike/crotch rocket look, and i think ima go with the chrome headers and muffler. how much was that kerker btw elk? and do they have a canister? and did all those baffles come with it as a set?

edit - can you put up a pic of that set on your bike?

i bought the kerker back in 81 for my last bike . it was a couple hundred and i had to re coat it every couple of years . yes it came with both baffles . I see kerker was bought out by super trap and they still make them for some applications but not for the xj's.broke my heart to find that out . the one i had was a tuned system with all 4 down tubes same length .It made the most incredible sound and it went directly down the middle of underside giving you incredible lean angle .
Draw back was removing it to change oil , and no center stand , but the only time you could drag that pipe was over a speed bump . I put 4 screws in the pipes down low so i could tune it .................Iloved it

I have another model of Kerker on my Seca900, installed by the PO, he didn't have to remove the center stand, and I think I won't have to move the headers to change the oil.

Just bought it this winter (February), haven't ridden it once! It seems there is a lot of clearance before the exhaust touches the pavement, can't see how i could do that...

Sounds great, indeed, sort of throaty!

Awesome guys! And I wondered why I couldn't find anything on eBay pertaining to kerker except old rusty stuff lol! The Mac says all service points are accessable and center stand is able to be left on +1!! I love bikes with center stands. Thanks for all the pics looks great! And I'm thinking all chrome with canister.

And as far as jetting I'm thinkin start at 2 up and then go from there. And also ask the seller what they think. And contact MAC and ask them :)

Mine came from a previous owner with a 4-1 system on it. After doing the carbs this winter I can say it still has the original jets in it. I have not done a colortune yet to see how the mixture is but I cannot tell any problems with the ride.

Those are the best Pictures of the exhaust that I have. Obviously the second shows how rusty it got and why it is currently being re-painted.

That was actually on a road that circles Skaneatles lake, one of the finger lakes. Really nice ride if you ever make it down here I recommend it.

Not very far south west of Syracuse, just got it on Google Earth, thanks!

Finger lakes are well named, there are close to a dozen of these very narrow shaped lakes, they look funny from the space...

Indeed. And they make for a great cruise to just go out and circle one of the lakes. Although Cayuga and Seneca are a long ride to circle at close to 50 miles long.

Sounds attractive. I already had an invitation from a member in Utica. It is six hours from my place, this ride you proposed would be a bit too much for the same week-end, i guess.

I have a mac 4-1 (sounds amazing btw, so you should get it!) on my 1100, it's running plugs that are a step hotter than stock, which leads me to believe the jets are stepped up as well.

But.. I haven't dug into the carbs yet so it's only speculation at this point.

    Here's a pic for fun 8)

Yeah I would definitely recommend the chrome, it looks even better in person 8)

And the baffle is in, I would offer to take a video of it... but the bike is currently undergoing a valve clearance check.

Actually, let me find a video of it for ya, I have a few hanging around

To be honest, I think it sounds so good, I have only made one half-willed attempt at taking the baffle out. I took out the screw at the end of the megaphone, and pulled at the inner pipe (which I thought was the baffle) and it wouldn't budge so I just put the screw back in.

I only wanted to do so for a day or so anyway because I imagined it would be absolutely ridiculously loud without the baffle because under WOT it sounds amazing right now and probably wouldn't want it any louder haha.

    As the exhaust is:
    - It is not annoying while cruising
    - But sounds like a demon while cranking the wrist
    - I can get it to backfire/pop a bit while decelerating in gear (especially downhill) and that is quite fun to listen to.

I have a video picked out with a few good sound clips, but it's bedtime so I will cut the vid up tomorrow to just have the good sound bites for ya, but off to sleep for now!

is that after you rode it for a bit?, if so thats just the carbon buildup making it a pain. but yea no reason if shes good with it, but still i guess i might remove it once and a while who knows, my neighbors hate it when im working on loud bikes and aren't particularly fond of me anyways since ill blow by there houses at 70mph sometimes :) so im down lol

and iv been on a couple of bikes that backfired when downshifting, in particular a 79' FLH shovelhead that was wicked sick loud, but on ocation i enjoy a fireball or two lol

Yeah, I bought the bike a year ago now, the PO had the MAC put on a couple of years before that so there was probably a decent amount of gunk on there. But yeah I just didn't feel like creating a problem by yanking on something I shouldn't when the exhaust sounds great as it is anyway.

I put together a little vid of a few clips from last summer to try to show a little of the mac sound. GoPro's aren't exactly wonderful at catching sound with their built-in mic but I am sure you get the general idea.

MAC exhaust clip on the xj1100 :)

Up there ^^^ is the link to the youtube vid I made for ya :)

(Sorry I don't know how to directly imbed a video)

IMHO I didn't really love my mac exhaust. I had it on for awhile. I didn't change jetting. It had a cool top end growl and a pretty tame low end rumble but sounded very" clangy" to me. The guys I ride with didn't like it at all. It got pretty old. I can't say its cause it was too loud... I'm running just headers to the collector box now and love how it sounds. And not having a dead spot. While I know the maxim x is pretty picky with how it's tuned though. If anyone wants to try one for a maxim x I'd let it go cheap.

Haha same here, keep calling the police on me for the slightest thing. Last time they said I was "firing a shotgun at the kids on the field" 8O I was actually firing a pistol at a target in the garden... A CO2 pistol at that!!!

I did used to make an effort to keep it down & use a quiet bike if I went out early or late, now just mostly run open pipes whenever lol I'm a bit of a twat really...

That guy on the Honda was rather amusing, but he surely wouldn't laugh if he did the old RickCoMatic "arse-skipping" move :?

I live in a small town, I know my neighbors and they know me, we do help each other every time we feel it's needed without being too invasive, so I do my best to keep my bikes quiet! Removing a baffle is not an option for me.

It'd be nice to have that sense of community here, you're lucky to have that & it's worth keeping. unfortunately "neighbours" round here are just as likely to stab or steal from each other as help out :(
