After a total strip down of my high mileage 1992 XJ900,and a thorough examination of all the engine internals by my mate Ray,a trained Engine fitter,he declared himself happy with the overall condition and tolerances of all parts. All we changed over from a donor engine was the primary chain, and guides, and the cam chain guides.A new cam chain from the original engine was refitted. All bearing surfaces, bearings, big end shell bearings were all within tolerance, only one shell had a very slight score in it.He was impressed by the engineering that went into the engine, and the quality of the castings and machining.
Now this is good news for you guys wondering about the internal condition of your engines,if it has been reasonably well looked after, and had its oil and filters changed regularly, don't worry, its probably in better internal condition than you could wish for,not bad for a bike with an anticipated lifetime of eight years.
