    hi all,
so, about 6 months ago i rebuilt a spare set of carbs i obtained with new throttle shaft seals, completely stripped all passages and jets, and cleaned all out, wet set floats and bench synced butterflies.
resealed intake boots, and replaced vacuum lines.
i then changed the carburettors, as the set that was on , i was getting a hanging idle, when stopping at lights etc , but not a bad hang, revs would fall after about5 seconds.
so, went for a test ride, and same thing hapening, tried to vacuum synch, with a homemade gauge, and readings are all over the place, try to even out the vacuum ,which is fine till i rev it , then readings wont settle, and idle hangs.
i found that if i back the tickover screw all the way off, the engine revs crisp and sharp and falls to zero straight away, its just that i have no tick over now, as soon as i put any tickover screw on, it , the revs hang.
gonna try to vacuum synch the butterflies, next week, whilst holding the throttle slightly open.
dunno , could this problem be the pilot screws, they were used ones i bought, off ebay but looked good.
set them at 2 1/2 turns out
sorry for long post, just dont know what else to try, got a week camping, biking trip coming up in a weeks time.
    thanks,stu,

Sounds like an air leak. Crack in intake boot, caps over the intake boot vacuum ports not sealing, carb not seated properly.

inspected intake boots whilst i had the carbs off, new gaskets and sealant on the boots to head, 600 doesnt have any caps on , the ports are connected to each other via vacuum tubes, with a "T" for the petcock.
as i said the engine works fine ,with the tickover screw backed off, so i cant think it would be a vacuum leak

yay, problem solved, been on my camping trip, and bike behaved brilliantly, kept up with the other guys on bigger bikes,
before we set of, i checked the plugs ,and they had a kinda grey /white tinge, so i backed the pilot screws out 1/2 a turn. then backed the tickover screw off , and went for a test ride.
i took a long screwdriver with me ,and after warm up , i kept stopping and adjusting the tickover screw ,till it just held itself ticking over, took several stops and adjustments, to get it just right.
500 miles on trip, some in slow traffic, and no issues at all, very pleased with the performance now, i'm convinced backing the pilot screws out has assisted in getting it running good, when i get a chance i will remove plugs and recheck colour
    :)
