I posted this earlier in the Chat forum but I was specifically asking for a possible mod to adapt Givi luggage to my 1985 XJ700 Maxim. Has anyone had any success in adding any type of hard case luggage to their XJ bikes?

I think some XJ Seca models came with hard luggage. No?

I've got hard bags for my maxim... Pacifico hardbags.

They mount on a frame with two pivot points and a key. I've never used them as I didn't want to deal with putting the mounting brackets on and off ( as I'd only wanted them for a few days and then not wanted them after )

Is your heart set on hardbags?

To do your mod - you'd need the plate that the bags attached to - then add arms that go:
    1) to the passenger foot beg,
    2) the shock mount
    3) the rear indicator stalk

That should give a nice solid mount for the hardbag plate. Flat steel would do and you could fab it all flat and get it welded somewhere. I think it is possible - the only question mark would be what the mounting bracket for the givi's looked like and what metal it was made out of.

Pacifico... can't find any reference for them on the net. I'm not set on Givi's, just like them for the price. Krauser makes a set for my XJ700 but at nearly $700 for the bags and over $200 for the mounting brackets kinda puts it out of my price range.

Is my heart set on hardbags? My heart is set on keeping to a budget and if I can buy those hardbags w/ mounting brackets for around $350 - great. If I cannot, then no, it wouldn't break my heart. Basically I would like some lockable storage on my bike.
