I have a stock 1981 yamaha maxim xj550. There is a good creased dent on the right side of the fuel tank. I'd like to replace the tank but I'm not sure what other models might fit on this bike. Any suggestions would help. Also I'm looking to modify the exhaust. Does anyone know if any other models exhaust are the same, 650, 750, seca, etc...
Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

DIRECT fit: The '81 ~'83 550 Maxims were mechanically identical.

Exhausts: Again, for a direct fit: All of the '81 ~'83 550s, Seca and Max, had the same exhaust system except for the mufflers.

Parts from the bigger, shaft-driven bikes (650/750/900) generally do not fit a 550.

If you mess with the airbox, or change the exhaust system (except for the mufflers) plan on having to re-jet. Generally speaking, if you leave the collector box alone, a simple muffler swap can be done without adversely affecting tuning.

Thanks! That helps. I'm modifying it and making it a military bike.
