I belong to a mostly sport bike club and I like to impress them. I carve canyons with them. I was riding a 81 XS650, but 2 days ago I got a XJ650 Maxim in very nice condition, but it needs shocks and forks. So for carving canyons what shocks and attention to the front forks would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Joanne

For the rear - anything new would be an improvement over 30 year old hardware.
For the front - I read a discussion on the XS site about drilling passages to change the damping and rebound, adding thicker oil, more oil, and progressive springs. These changes were to make the forks work more like a modern bike. Same ideas can be used on the XJ, but you would need to get with a mechanic who is willing to build something non-stock.
