so today i replaced the leaky carb holders on an '82 maxim xj650j that i got two weeks ago. I had it running decent last week but it was not happy with air leaks in the holders. (it was idling real funky)... now with new air rubbers and new carb holders it sounds smoooooth!!!----but- it idles at 4500rpm! do i need to adjust the large knob (idle adjustment) in the middle of the carb bank, or.....? thanks!

More likely you'd have to speed the idle up after fixing an air leak.

Check and make sure you didn't get the end of the throttle linkage trapped behind the head. That piece the cable bullet goes in should be standing almost straight up. If it's caught on the head you'll need to back the carburetors off the holders to free it up.

Other thing to check is the cable itself. Bullet in the linkage correctly, cable sheath down in the bucket etc.

thanks! I'll check that tonight after work-

say whats the best way to put the bank of carbs back onto the carb holders? I mounted the holders to the motor before i set the bank down because I could not otherwise get to the allen screws. the problem with this is that I cant get the carbs to fully seat on the holders- that and it was a pain in the butt to get the bank in! I hesitate to put any kind of lubricant on the holders to get teh carbs to slide in easier..... thanks for your help folks! awesome site, great people!

I already replied to your other post. Answer is lube them up. I like WD-40.
