I am needing to know if there is any wheel that would be able to swap for the 700 maxim rear!

I want to get a wider one but fear that I will have to redo all the work already done to the bike. ie shaft etc.

    any ideas?

46 people viewed.. no one has any suggestions or idea.

right will ask another friend tomorrow who will probably know.. My fear is that it will have to be a custom job..

yeah yeah watch the people come in now and say ooh I thought it might be..... there has to have been someone who has done this.. I cant be the first... ffs.. these bikes are over 25 years old!

I read your post this morning and would have replied but thought it best to leave it to the stateside members as my answer would have been "Don't think so"! I have read a post where the subject of wide rear tyres was raised an it was suggested you could cut out the curved section over the shaft and weld in a flat plate.

    Me - I wouldn't!!

I has thought about doing that mod to my 900.

There is enough stock which could be removed and replaced without the "Curves" that would allow for mounting a larger Rear Tire.

It would require precision cutting and skilled welding to remove the material from the SwingArm and remodel it.

You want custom?? Here goes- -
Get a machinist to make a spacer to offset mount the spline to the rim.
Weld it, then get strong bolts. Trim the axle spacer the same amount.

A 10 MM spacer will let you mount a 150. Notch the driveshaft and you can go 170 or so.

(the performance board of XJ Bikes does not endorse these modifications)

So then the wheel would not be centred??

thanks for the heads up... I just got back from the shop today... after really carefully examining it.. I can see why its not recommended... Shame really.. I could or should have found another bike shaft driven.. then had the axle cut and modified to suit... sadly I didnt.. so that side of things will have to remain as they are.. the above comments and suggestions are good.. although not without risk.. obviously.

thanks again.. really.. I mean it.. i hate typing cause I cant say thankyou wihout it sounding so plain.. arrrgh.... cheers fellas.

Yes, it's a compromise, but there was a V-Max with a 20 MM offset that worked, so why not 10 MM ??

I wouldn't ride a bike that didn't have one wheel following the other. 8O

Wouldn't you ride an outfit (sidecar) ?? That's completely unbalanced, yet safe.

Your missing the point & the only thing safe about a combo, is that it doesn't fall over at traffic lights.

i've read some things on wheel alignment and the conclusion was, you can't feel a 1/2 inch off set, the more important part was that they both point straight ahead

ok... well lets say I did go for a 10mm offset... what other wheel would fit? ie rim.. I cant change that for anything shelf bought.
