Guys I have searched till I have a headache and can't find a definitive answer. I apologize if it's out there.

I found a Chacal ref that says clearances are

    Inlet .11 - .15 mm
    Exhaust .16 to .20

For all XJ motors except 750s(? can't locate again to cite sorry)

Then I see ref to these being correct for the 650 seca but can not confirm for 650 maxim (don;t know the difference )

The haynes manual (full of errors I know) says

    XJ650(UK) and XJ650J

    Inlet and exhaust .16 - .20

If the first set of #s is right I only have 3 tight valves. If not I have a bunch because it appears to have been shimmed to the first spec.

    Thanks for your help.

There's some debate about why one XJ model has different specs than all the others. Same basic parts, operating parameters, Etc.

Since these bikes tend to become "tight" with wear, it would make sense to shim-and-adjust towards the "loose" end of the spec's.

The correct clearances for an XJ650 (both Maxim and Seca, not necessarily turbo models):

    Intake .11-.15mm
    Exhaust .16-.20mm

Cool tnx for th confirmation - I thought so but you can't be too careful. Now I have ot order 3 shims from Len and do it all over again to replace them.

My tightest are on Cyl 4

    I .076mm (.003")
    E .102mm (.004")

How tight is too tight? is there any danger in riding it till next weekend when I will have the parts and time to do the job?

OK order sent to Chacal for shims and the bolt seals.

A couple of comments. This was my first valve check on this bike and it was not too bad thanks to the great advice I found on this forum.

I used Ricks tie wrap trick after finding great pictures and explanations here. It worked like a charm to remove the shims! Also thanks for Rick for some PM advice he gave me on the cover gasket.

I hate doing it twice but not much choice. I wound up not be able to do any swapping - the 3 I had were all tight. Most of the rest were at the lower limit.

Thanks again for a ll the great advice you guys have accumulated and continue to provide.
