    Hey Fellas, new XJ owner here. My name's Denis, pleasure to meet you.

    I bought my first bike(04 CBR 1000RR *orange repsol in attached photo*) Memorial day '14, blew a rod out the front in August. Bought an engine off CL with a blown head gasket. Got another one off the forums by recommendation and blew a gasket within a lap and a half at gingerman raceway and here I am. Bike has been at a shop for a week but they won't touch it until next week.

    I went into an auction today looking for computer parts, and I came across this posting:

    1982 Yamaha Motorcycle, VIN# JYASG2004CA108838, 250cc 4-Cylinder Carb Engine, Manual 5-Speed Trans, Electric Start, Shaft Drive, Air Cooled, Front Ind. Susp., Rear Ind. Susp., Aluminum Wheels, 2-Seater, inspection cover is cracked, tanks dented, headlight busted out, clutch cable is missing, has other misc. issues, could be for parts or repair, non-running, CLEAR TITLE. Titled Vehicle

    The opening bid was already set, I set my max bid. Someone up'd me 10 minutes within the end of the bid, so I went some more. Bid closed, after tax, title, registration, broker fees, and I'm out the door!

    Went onto progressive and put the VIN in to look at costs and find the actual model, and turns out it's a 82 XJ750R. It's gonna take a lot of work, but I'm a persistent SOB. So here I am! Currently it's labeled as not running, but I will get specifics on Wednesday when I pick it up.


    So where should I start? I'd love to turn it into a racer! Can someone tell me why it says 2500cm3 on the case?

    Start by reading The Information Overload Hour (link in my signature). Get a service manual while you're at it. Even with the help of this forum member, the manual is an important tool. We reccomend that you get both the Haynes and the Yamaha FSM as neither one covers everything.

    A few notes:

    Your new bike has what appear to be HD Sportster mufflers (this is not a bad thing, nor a good thing, it just is)

    Your bike is missing the instrument cluster. This could be a very bad (but fixable) thing depending on how the prior owner deleted the instruments. The 750 has an electronic systems monitor that is integral to the ignition safety system. It can be bypassed if you do not want to use the factory gauges (but is is really really cool to have one; all the kids are doing it).

    Your bike has the much sought after "sporty" version of the case guards.

    It has aftermarket bars, and apears to be missing the left side switchgear and clutch lever.

    It is missing the passenger grab bar and right side cover.

    You do indeed have a project, but all of the really expensive bits are there. Given it's current state I'd get it into running condition. pound the dent out of that tank, and make it look a bit racier than stock.

    Welcome to the group and congrats on the bike. You will find plenty of posts here a out maintenance and all the knowledge you need to get it right.

    - check valve shims
    - check/rebuild carbs
    - check brake shoes and pads

    The list is long to overcome 30+ years of neglected maintenance.
