Hey all. Just registered here after lurking around in the background for the past week. Great site with alot of info on these bikes. Picked up an 82 650 Maxim a couple weeks ago, and have been tearing into it as time has allowed. Previous owner started a Bobber build on it, but my plans are to make it a Cafe. A choice which obviously has an uphill climb, but I think I'm up to the challenge. The fact that the bike came with half the parts for a second bike helps alot!

Anyway, glad to finally be a part, here. Looking forward to picking your brains!

Welcome from Cape Cod. I ride the same scooter, it's treated me well. Paul Newman used to say HiYa.

Hey guys. Thanks for the warm welcome. Right now, she's torn apart, so there really isn't much to look at. Been busy just trying to recondition stuff like the side covers, trimmed down the front fender (took 6" off the front and about 4-5 off the back half.). I lucked out, since the PO already had a set of clubmans on it. Unfortunately, he had them installed upside down. I have the stock tank sitting in a plastic tote right next to me, letting the body filler dry. I am filling in the nameplate recesses and brackets. Did that with JB weld, cut with acetone, so it flowed better behind the brackets and would lock into place. Then, any remaining surface irregularities, I am filling and leveling with Evercoat Metal Glaze. I have to put it in the tote so the wife doesn't bitch about the fumes, since the garage is a bit too cold for paint and body stuff right now. Got it's furnace repaired, today, so I should be good to go, back down there, in a day or so.

I removed the brackets on my tank. Was planning on using Bondo. Haven't heard of using JB Weld and Evercoat (actually never heard of the Evercoat)...

Used the JB Weld for the majority of the gap filling. Evercoat is real nice to work with and doesn't shrink like other fillers can. Sands real easily. I figured I'd leave the brackets in place to give the JB Weld something to grab hold of. figured that'd be better than just trying to fill in the remaining furrow, left over.

Yeah, I saw this bike! Nice work! Quite a bit like what I'm looking to do. Maybe a bit more aggressive looking than what he did, but that IS the gist of it. thanks for reminding me about this bike!
