hi guys, i just bought a 79 xj1100 special. Somehow the horn button and start button are missing. Should i get all new controls or can i replace the button? Also, it starts really hard. There is no air filter in it so i think that might be why. It spits and sputters and stalls until it has run for quite a long time, any ideas?

Until you get the right buttons installed, new or used, you can rig up a cheap horn button from an auto parts store to the 2 wire pigtail on the solenoid. Red/White gets fused 12 V power, the other wire drops to ground thru the button.
Bike junk yards won't break-up a good control cluster, but might just give you a damaged cluster (road rash) that they can't otherwise sell.

Chacal has replacement buttons and I vagely recall Injeneer has them as well. I'd pull the carbs even if the fellow said he cleaned them. Lead boots is right, some folks don't know what they are doing and will call a rinse "cleaning" the carbs.

is there anyway to clean them without taking them off the bike or taking them out of sync?
