How hot do mufflers (and collector) get? Curing HEAT Paint

Anyone know approximate surface temps the Mufflers (and collector + pipes) get?

Obviously the header pipes get the HOTTEST, but I'm concerned about using HIGH HEAD header paint if the mufflers do not get hot enough to properly cure the paint.

If it matters, I'm considering POR-15's silver POR-20 or black velvet temp paints. They already emailed me back saying I can paint right over chrome if I use their prep products (and my headers are getting quite rusty).

On a long ride they get hot enough so you can't touch them of course. If you are going to paint your exhaust off of the bike, I would get the chrome removed and the paint baked on. Any plating shop could dip the pipes and it only takes seconds for the chrome to come off. Then a quick bead blast and your ready for high temp primer and paint. It will last a long time untill the rock chips will cause you to re- do them after awhile.
I always liked the black exhaust on the midnight maxims. I think it looks sharp with the bikes gold accents. I know that's not what your going to do but a nicely done black exhaust system will be good looking just the same.

I thought the factory head pipes were some type of stainless, and not chrome plated - - they never peel. But they do rust, and that can be sanded and buffed away.

Some info I read in Hot-Rod magazines - Combustion temps inside the CYL are 3,000 * + and the head of the exhaust valve can run at 1,500* going down to 700* in the stem. Conventional oil burns at 500* and the valve stem needs to stay lubricated.
The exhaust quickly cools coming out of the motor. I have an IR thermometer and I've seen 550* at idle. The exhaust will glow red on a dyno pull, which is about 1,200*.

Good to know. The POR-15 brand paint needs 300-400 F to cure properly.

I painted the 4-1 that was on my bike when I got it with VHT flame proof black. Header all the way back. It cured fine. I followed the directions on the can about idle for so long, off for so long etc. Just keep in mind it will smoke while curing.
