Regarding free play on the swing arm, that is.
Had the swingarm off this week, with intention of replacing parts if need be. Aside from the old axle bolt being rusty, things came apat easily. The bushings looked OK, the bolt had some minor wear and rust pitting. After cleaning and greasing, when reassembled, I can grasp the swingarm at the wheel adjusters and get a wee amount of play. I don't see any specs in my Clymer manual that would give a no-go figure, and I know many times you can reassemble something with all new parts and be unpleasantly surprised to find little or no difference. (Don't ask me how I know this) I don't mind laying out the cash if needed, but I don't have cash to burn on this bike either. Anyone know if there is a real, honest-to-gosh spec on allowable play? Thanks!

Tighten the adjuster (allen key) to 43-52 lbf in, hold it while you tighten the locknut to 72.3 lbf in.

If we assume the question is in regard to his XJ, then:

The Seca 550 doesn't have an "adjustable" swingarm bushing arrangement like the shaft driven bikes. Recommended torque on the nut is 65ft/lb.

According to the factory book, allowable swingarm side-play is 1.0mm (.04") They say if play is excessive, replace the bushings.

Chacal carries a German-made rebuild/upgrade kit that replaces the original crap plastic bushings with needle bearings. As soon as either of mine have to come apart, I'm going to go that route.

Ahhh, that's the answer I was looking for!
(Now c'mon guys, would I really be so tacky as to ask a question about one of "the others" on the XJ forum??? Without specifying??? I think not...)
Without measuring, I can probably say the play exceeds .04.......guess it's time to contact Len again (Chacal). Well, at least I know how it comes apart now. There really IS a rainbow in every cloud! :D
