How to remove valve stem guides

    Hey all! I'm done sodablasting the engine, except for the valve head.
    Need to get the valve stem guides out.
    I did do a search, but to no avail.

    Anybody?

    Why remove the guides? Are they worn beyond spec?

    If the guides aren't worn, galled or grooved, I'd remove the valve stem seals and leave the guides.

    That being said, I can look in a factory book when I get home if nobody else has answered before then.

    Guides are generally a press fit....
    Leave them alone, once loosened a guide can drop, which is destructive.

    If a engine reconditioner needs to repair the guides, even they will not normally remove them, they would ream them out and put inserts in (brass/bronze knurled k-line inserts were the GO years back)

    My advice is to leave the guides alone unless there is a problem. Darkfibre, I think you are mistaken about guides "dropping", of all the heads I've seen the guides only go in one way and due to a shoulder machined into the guide, it can't go into the combustion chamber.
    Erman, if you are still thinking about doing this, take your head to a qualified machine shop that does automotive machining.

    Thanks guys. I will leave the guides in place while blasting. The seals are out and will be replaced.

    If a guide drops, it can jam a valve open, which on an interference engine is bad.
    I have not seen a factory fitted guide drop, but have seen one drop that had been aftermarket replaced.

    heat the head in an oven and you are able to tap the guides out.

    +1 what others said, leave them alone unless they are gone.


    blast with soda, anything harder and you will mess up the surfaces

    I doubt soda blasting would have any effect on the valve guides, its a fairly gentle process. I,ve had heads soda blasted before, without any protection on the the guides or camshaft journals and it has not been an issue.Just remember to thoroughly wash all the soda residue off before painting.

    Since you got your answer, it's ok for me to interject an offcolor comment;

    This is exactly why I love my two strokes<LOL>!!! My turbo is a blast to ride but I'm not looking forward to the day it needs a new top end.
