    Hi everyone

    New to the forum today.
My brother in law picked up a 1989/90 f reg xj600 yesterday.
Less than 24 hours later he's dropped it!!!!

A few cosmetic bits to sort with the help of ebay will be relatively straight forward however the steering seems to be different. Prior to dropping it the steering felt as it should to, turn ;eft to right with ease . . . after the drop turning the bars from left to right takes alot more effort. The drop it self was, taking a slight bend, 25mph ish, touch of front brake and down she went with a little side along the tarmac. The bike landed on its right hand side with the handle bar end taking a hit.

Any thoughts from any of you on here what i could try looking at to see if i can sort it? Im not technically minded but my first thoughts are steering bearings probably shot . . . any thoughts?

Also are the brakes on an xj600 known for being sharp??

Any help would be much appreciated

    Simon

You may want to check the wiring harness and cables to see if they are not stretched because of bent handlebars. Most of my wiring harness and cables are on the left of the neck, and if the bars bend in on the right, it would tighten the play on them making it harder to turn right, but not left.

I would think it is more then the cables if it is both ways. Make sure you didn't bend the forks, or twist the triple tree. You may want to loosen everything up, then re tighten it.

You will have to remove the triple tree to see if the bearings/races are good.

Loosen the front tube mounts and re tighten. Be sure to put something under the bike to get the weight off the front wheel so the tubes don't slide up or down. This will release any tension caused by twisting of the front shock towers during the crash.

Not sure if this will help your problem or not, but it is an easy first check .
