Hypoid Gear Oil for Drive Shaft 81 XJ650

    So I was researching on this forum and found a thread where someone recommended regular ol gear oil 80w/90 for the drive shaft??

    Does it not have to be hypoid oil? The guy at autozone told me that they don't have hypoid oil and that id need to go to a small motor shop.

    Hypoid is reffering to the design of the gears. There are two types of gears ; hypoid, and spur. Im a mechanic and can tell you that even though rear differentials in cars have hypoid gears, unless if its limited split, they use either regular or synthetic gear oil. If you are looking in the manual it might be using the term hypoid gear oil in an obsolete way. I would say that you are probably safe with gear oil. Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.
