yamyboy: Blue was the older MI plate. They now come in white with a blue band at the top, or this design, for motorcycles. This design adds $5.

mwhite74: $53 USD for the plate initially (including the extra $5 for the fancy design;) then it will be $38/year after that (the normal renewal, $23 + $15 because it's personalized.)

TIME: No, that would be the Mackinac bridge, that connects Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. Interesting myth, but one I have yet to see disproven: Any motorcyclist crossing the Mackinac Bridge for the first time WILL get rained on; if not on the way over then on the way back. I know I did.

schooter: Umm, no you won't. You're allowed 5 characters (including spaces) on a personalized motorcycle plate in Michigan.

Wow - you guys get custom plates CHEAP!

Here in Ontario, a customized plate for a motorcycle is $235 up front, and $48/yr renewals. You can't get graphics on our plates though... only on auto plates, and then the cost goes up to $315 (personalized + graphic).

Sounds like it. This is a first for me, but since I'll be keeping/riding the '83 for a while it seemed like it would be cool especially since it WAS so reasonable.

Michigan offers a couple dozen different "graphics" plates, everything from Agricultural boosting to the various Universities' logos to Child Abuse Prevention. For cars.

Motorcycles only get two choices, plain or the "Splendid Peninsulas" above.

Fitz, you got a bargain. 567 XJ really is that much!!!!!

There is a silver lining to this price cloud, however. I checked the same site and they are selling a registration with the same combination of letters as mine for £2000!!!!!

The bike was only £350 and the registration is MINE! FOREVER!!

Maybe that's why it costs so much more for yours. As we've discussed, the motor vehicle licensing here is year-to-year; you do keep a plate for a few years and just get a new stickie tab, but virtually every time a vehicle changes hands it gets re-registered. You can also change registration almost at will; 83 XJ is replacing T633C for that bike just because I wanted to get a personalized plate now.

We're also a tad more spread out here; so the licensing is also state-by-state, with each state having its own licensing and fees, etc.

Imagine doing what LtDave did over there? X3 bikes???

Yes, because vehicle licencing is countrywide and the reg stays with the vehicle, the values are high. (Well, what you get charged for them anyway).

My plate has DAV at the end - only any good if I was called Dave and the cost is for a private sale. The licencing authority has now stopped releasing anything that looks vaguely like it spells a name, and sells them themselves.

Uk plates are a combination of letters and numbers and the format keeps changing as all the combinations get used up and its actually an offence to split the registration up to make it look like two words, or try to make numbers look like letters.

I contacted the company selling the registration numbers to see if they will buy mine! Of course, I would then buy another XJ and keep the one I have for spares!

We here in Quebec will be paying 630$ this year for our plates and those are just regular plates. Quebec does not allow customized plates. Imagine plates went up 300$ in that last 5 years. For the crotch rockets its 1400$ yearly now. So guys dont complain please ;)

OUCH! What makes the difference between $630 for your bike and $1400 for a "crotch rocket?" Where would say, an XJ600 fall?

In the regular touring 630$(1400$ for the crocth rockets only meaning super sports) or any vehicule over 25 years can be plated as a collection bike is 90$ but you cant use hwy's that are over 70 kph so not worth it

How many different motorcycle categories are there?

    Touring, SuperSports, ??

How do they decide, for instance in the case of a sport-tourer like the FJR1300 with full luggage, etc?

Is it possible to say, "modify yourself" into a higher category by changes to the bike, or do they stick to "as produced" specs?

Sorry to play "20 Questions" but it's fascinating...

wow that is crazy!!!! does that include insurance?? I know in B.C the insurance is all government controlled but here in Alberta the gov. does plates and insurance is private cars and light trucks are $70.45 per year motorcycles are $45 per year but those prices are also pro rated and expire in order by last name so my last name is "Saumer" my plates kick it at the end of october but when I bought the maxim the year before last it was june-july and my plates were only $22.00! oh and it is the same price to renew as it is to get new plates so if you wanted to you could get a new plate # every year and it wouldn't cost any extra!!! vanity plates are about $225.00 regardless f car or bike even tho they are different sizes

I pay $144 for my suzuki (it was the same for my XJ) but it gets added to my monthly so its $220 for full coverage on my car and the wifes the house and basic on the bike I guess I can't really complain for $12 per month and no payment it's not to bad when it sits!! thats the biggest thing that stops me from buying a new bike, I just have such a hard time justifing a $200-$300 a month payment on something that I can only use five months a year!!

Have to say Montreal would be the coolest city in Canada. Cause its a liberated city. One of the oldest cities too. Always something to do and the women are hot ;). Xj650ss here's the link to the comedy fest http://www.hahaha.com/en/festival/10/.
We also have the jazz fest and from what I know its one of the biggest in the world if not the biggest .
