Just wanted to post to thank those who help me with my free 82 Yamaha XJ650R Seca.
Before I was given the bike by one of my wife's co-worker, the bike sat for 20 years stuck in 1st gear.
The PO was quoted over a thousand dollars to repair the bike, so he pushed it into a corner of his garage. At a company function with spouses Tom asked me if I wanted his motorcycle. Being a scavenger I could not turn down anything mechanical that is free. Before he could change is mind I went to their with my bike trailer to retrieve the bike, Tom's wife was very happy to have it gone. My wife was not as happy when I stuck in the shed for the summer.

Winter project; I learned from this forum that the problem was more than likely a section of the alt/starter chain guide stuck in the shift drum. Pull the engine, split the cases, yes there was a chunk stuck in the shift. New chain guide and a gasket set. (note: DO NOT purchase an off brand gasket set off E-Bay as the gaskets do not fit very well, and I ended up purchasing Yamaha OEM gaskets). Checked the bores, in spec, rings in cylinders, gap in spec, bearings measured in spec, valves looked good. Engine was healthy and in good shape. Engine back together and in the frame. Disassembled the fork, new seals and oil. Bleed the brakes. Had to replace the fuse box, as the PO had installed in-line fuses, a wiring mess. Cleaned the Hitachi carbs, luckily the only needed a few o-rings and needle valve. I did replace the vacuum petcock with a manual valve.

I have been riding the Seca this spring. Yesterday I took an Advanced Riders Course on my lightest bike, the Seca. Temperatures in the mid 90's and I had no over heating problems, the bike has a Lockheed oil cooler. Brakes and suspension performed fine in low and high speed maneuvers, I never felt out of control.
The little Seca is a sweet riding bike, quick handling. Brakes could be better, thinking of braid brake lines, and a set of HH Sintered brake pads.

It amuses me that YOU are telling US not to buy aftermarket gaskets because they don't fit well...... we've been preaching that for a loooooooong time :)

Congratulations on your accomplishment! Now, show us a pic!
