I suppose I oughta introduce myself...

Since I guess you guys are going to be my online encyclopedia for all things Maxim related, I might as well introduce myself.

I've got a 1982 XS400J Maxim with what I'm led to believe are 6130 original miles. The story I was told was that it was purchased in 1994, needing some carb work. The guy that bought it took the carbs apart and couldn't figure out how to put them back together, so he put them in a box, put the box on the bike, covered the whole mess up and put it in the corner of the garage. The guy I ended up buying it from bought it and put it back together and back in riding condition.

I'm 30 years old, live in Iowa and this is my first motorcycle. I've ridden quads and dirtbikes before, but they all belonged to friends or family. I've also been known to do some pretty sick s**t on a mountain bike, so I've got a pretty good handle on how to maneuver on two wheels. I'm still running around with my learner's permit, riding with a friend of mine until I can take the MSF course in roughly 4 weeks' time. Don't tell the cops, but I've racked up quite a few miles on the country roads around here by myself as well. :p I also got a bucket of sidewalk chalk and some little orange cones from the toy department at Target and I've been practicing the skill tests for the license in an empty parking lot. I've pretty much got them all down. They ain't pretty, but I'd pass the test if I took it tomorrow.

As far as mechanical aptitude, I know which end of the screwdriver to hold and can do anything I need to with the right tools and some instructions. And with a 26 year old bike, I'm sure there's going to be stuff for me to do.

Anybody know where I might be able to find some licensed drivers to ride around with on the weekends? The friend of mine I've been riding with is my supervisor at work. Him and I live 40 and 20 miles from work in opposite directions, so there's roughly 60-65 miles between us. Be nice to find someone closer to Des Moines.
