I recently had my carbs cleaned and synced on my new (to me) 85 XJ700.

The bike had been dying when I gave it gas, now after warming up awhile it seems good to go. When it's cold and I give it too much gas there is a big delay and then it accelerates. Is that normal?

The other issue is that the after riding the idle doesn't come all the way back down to 1000-1200. It stays at around 2000 with the clutch all the way in and the throttle closed. Sometimes it will drop back down to 1000. Is there something just stuck? Any ideas on how I could fix that?

    Thanks a lot!

Your mix and/or idle speed adjustments are off. Possibly your enrichment circuit plungers are not closing all the way.

If you paid someone to do it recently return to them and ask them to fix it correctly this time.

If you did the work the search on here for tuning by ear there's lots of great tips.

Well, the weird thing is that sometimes it does return to the right idle speed. So it's almost as if it's set to the right idle speed, but it somehow gets stuck on the way back down.

I paid a guy to do it, not a shop, just a guy in his garage. I'll contact him and see what he thinks.

In the mean time if there's anything anyone could think of that I could do myself that would be great.

    Thanks!

I just spoke with the guy I had do it. He mentioned that the slide needles looked pretty worn when he cleaned the carbs.. Not sure if new ones of thse would help.

ALSO, I can get the idle to drop back down to normal by pushing on the choke linkage with my hand.. Obviously not an ideal operating procedure, but maybe that will help determine whats causing it?

    Thanks for any ideas/ help

You need to get set-up so that when you let-off the Throttles at the Handlebar Grip, ... the Throttles CLOSE at the Carbs.

This is a function of Basic Fine Tuning of the XJ-Engines with CV. Carbs.

Initially, the PILOT MIXTURES need to be set to IDLE the Bike and allow the Engine to run at close to 1,000 rpm's.

To achieve this the Engine needs to have the Mixture Screws providing a Mixture that will sustain combustions without help from the Throttles.

When the Throttles get CLOSED ...
    They have to GET Closed.
Reliance on the Idle Adjustment Rod keeping the Throttles Open to keep the Bike running, ... throws-off the process of letting you set the IDLE and OFF-IDLE Supplement.
The Throttles are helping you keep the Bike from stalling.

The Bike does not want to lower its rpm's because Fuel and Air are present keeping the rpm's up.

Backing-off the Idle Adjust Rod to looser the IDLE causes the Bike to need having the Throttles HELD Open or it will stall.

There isn't enough Richness at the Opening of the Throttles so you wait a moment for Main FUEL to kick-in.
