i recently aquired this 86 xj700 that hasn't been on the road in at least ten years so i tore down the carbs and cleaned out all of the varnish. then set the floats to the specifications in my manual. the only problem is that when the bike starts the idle climbs up to about 4000rpm and won't come back down even though the butterflies are all completely shut.
i can't figure it out because the bike doesn't act like its flooding and starts like a dream when its cold, and i doesn't really miss when its at 4000.
does anyone know what is going on here
    thanks for your time
    James

I'm thinking if your throttle cable has slack, the linkages are shut, and the idle knob is set all the way back, maybe your enrichment circuit (choke) is stuck open...

If the bike is revving at 4,000 ... The Butterflys are OPEN.

A common error is to get the LINKAGE stuck OPEN ... with the connection for the throttle cable jammed under the lip of the Cylinder Head between 2 + 3.

Back-out the Manual Idle Control Rod. Jet the linkages all squared-away and FEEL the throttle cable. Make sure it's not tight.
