I was about to put the ignitor I replaced on my bike to trace a running problem (turned out not to be the ignitor), when I noticed that the one I had on my 650 was a Type TID14-06 5G2-10, for a 750 seca. The one i put in was a Type TID14-08 5V2-10, for a 650 seca. Reading in my Haynes, the timing for the XJ750 starts at 7*@1050 RPM's intermediate is 9* at 1600 rpm's +/- 200 rpm's and full advance is 37.5* +/- 2* at 4000 rpm's. The XJ650 is slightly different, starting at 10*, UP TO 12* at 1800 rpm's and same full advance, but at 5000 rpm's. So i am wondering if i would be best off using the 650 box, as it pulls more advance down low and peaks at a higher rpm, i am guessing to make up for the lessor torque and more top end biased power band. So any input anyone? cruzerjd

Run it and see how it performs.

I'm guessing your going to like the difference ... right away!

I think that's the curve that those "Very Special Ones" you can buy on Ebay work at.

Which curve. Seems that the green (650) box would pull at a bit higher rpm. The red box (750) always had that annoying flat spot between 4 and 5000 rpm's. I am assuming it might be because the motor is designed to pull at higher rpm's. I might be blowing smoke up my butt too and there won't be a difference. The green box is what my seca was supposed to come with so I will stick with it. cruzerjd

After getting my plugs gapped right (.28 not.48) i was able to get my bike out for a couple of good days riding. With the 750 Seca/Maxim box (red), the bike had a definate lag between 4 and 5000 rpm's, and and did not want to idle well. With the correct 650 Seca box (green) i now have a flawless powerband and excellent low end manners. So later ignition advance helped smooth out the lag between 4 and 5000 rom's and the early initial timing helps it idle well at 1050 rpm's. Definately a nice difference. cruzerjd
