perhaps this is too general of a question but i'm curious...does an ignitor typically fail over time or all of a sudden?

Usually it will fail for one "channel" - i.e. no spark on 2/3 or no spark on 1/4. General and complete failure seems to be more rare.

However, since a number of TCI failures are due to dry electrolytic caps and cracked solder joints, intermittant (often vibration sensitive) issues in one channel are not uncommon.

well, i picked up a used one off ebay from a bike with 16K miles and the guy guarantees it to work. $45 with shipping included SEEMS like a good deal. SQLGuy...thanks...that's exactly what i used to narrow it down to the ignitor.
