Hey guys, I thought i was going to pass out when i found this forum! It was such a releif to find it. A few years ago i had a KZ440 and found a group that helped me alot and now i REALLY need the help. My cousin just gave me a 82 XJ750 maxim. He had it for awhile and planned to rebuild it. It ran when he got it and then he tore it apart (mainly body work and electrical). He said that before he tore it down he could only start it with a jump pack and a brand new battery, this leads me to beleive that the generator is bad. Am i right on assuming this? I have alot planned for this bike that i didnt think of to do with my last. I looked at the mod section and people have some really nice stuff on here. I already have a HD tank that i customized in advance  . So, I am hoping that you guys will be able to help me find parts and with the wiring mess i have to deal with.

Welcome Dan! Hope you find all you seek here. We've several electrical types (myself included) to help out with the wiring and parts, well let's just say they aren't made of gold...yet. Eager to see what you have. Pictures are worth a thousand words as the saying goes. Be sure to have your digital camera handy, it'll smooth the road to success.

    Where abouts in PA?

There are a couple of us in the Lehigh Valley that get together on occasion.

I'm also new here, and from PA(lehigh valley). Got my first bike last week, an 83 maxim 650. Got it for cheep cuz the carbs were clogged. I found lots of info here that helped me out in getting it running. Now if the title would just come in the mail already so i can get plates for it.

<--- Another electrical guy here! I've had my bike apart so many times I almost know which wire goes where by heart :)

If the bike is drawing that much juice when you hit the starter, there could be a couple things. The generator is not one of them. Most likely the starter has a bad winding or the brushes are worn. You could also have a bad ground connection between the battery and the frame, a bad starter solenoid, or a bad connection between the starter and the solenoid or solenoid and battery.

But if in order to turn over it requires both a brand new battery AND a jumper pack, my money is on the starter.
