I was a member years ago for a short while when I took on a XJ550 project.
I liked the bike but it was a little small in size for me. The power was fine, I just felt cramped. I recently saved a 1985 XJ700N from the trash so here I go again but this time I think the size is good.

The only things this bike had going for it was good tires, battery and a style that I like. Otherwise it has been sitting under a tree for the last 8 months.
    Completed so far;
-got the motor running enough to verify it was worth further investment
-replaced the missing speedometer that was missing
    -new speedo cable
    -new throttle cable
    -new clutch cable
    -new clutch lever
    -new grips
    -new oil and filter
    -new rearend grease
    -replaced missing front brakes
    -fixed starter button
-cleaned the existing carbs 3 times the replaced with a new used set
-bonded title and picked up tags today
    -acid washed gas tank
    -rebuilt petcock valve

    Still Needed
    -adjust valves
    -sync carbs
    -replace fork seals
    -replace seat cover
-paint or powder coat, tank, and fenders

I have never adjusted valves that have shims before so any links to the process and a parts needed would be welcome. I have a buddy that owns a carb sync set I will try to borrow after I get the valves adjusted.

I have replaced for seals before but only once. I purchased All-Balls for seals but any words of wisdom on this would be great, more parts or tools needed and oil weight.

I love all kinda of bikes and I'm doing my best to own one of each, at least for a short time. My favorite bikes I have owned was Harley V-ROD, Bandit 1200S, 2010 Kawi Concours, Yamaha FZ6, my son's 2010 Z1000, too many dirt bikes.

    Welcome back.

You have a Victory 8 Ball? SWEET!!! I really like the looks of it. My son-in-law has a full-dressed Victory. What a boat!
I rode it once and in 4th gear at 3k rpm, it doing 60mph. It still has two more gears! Where would you use 6th gear? The Autobahn?

My brother in law has the Victory Vision, he loves it. I do like the 8 ball alot, good power, comfortable, easy to service. Pricey oil change at 6 qts synthetic but you can't win them all.

So I checked all the valve's and this is what i got
    exhaust .006 .0075 .006 .006
    pad size 260 na 260 260

    intake .004 .005 .005 .002
    pad 265 na na 270

The na is the one's in spec so I didn't check the pad size
    What I am confused about is .004 = .1016 I would round that to .10 not .11
so the intake at .004 = .10mm with pad 265 needs pad 260 right?

The way I have it figured is I need change 3 exhaust from 260 pads to 255 pads and one intake pad from 265 to 260 and a 270 to a 260

Do you ever move used pads around from one valve to another or replace with new? Where do I order replacement pads?

Or if I read someone else's inch to mm conversion then I am good with
    intake .004 to .006
    exhaust .006 to .008
in that case I only have one intake at .002 = .05mm 270 pad to 260 pad to replace.

do yourself the favor of grabbing a metric feeler gauge set. They are cheap and more accurate for our application. As far as swapping shims around, most people do it as long as they don't show any obvious wear. Hogfiddles runs a shim pool where you can swap shims.
