I'm putting a Maxim 750 tank on my 650 and it had the fuel guage attached at one point. What is involved in installing everything from the sending unit that goes in the tank up to the guage on the handlebars? Do they make an aftermarket guage for this?

I did the same thing to my 650. I used the instruments from a 550 SECA to get the fuel gauge.

Sure. Check my gallery. The Dec 09 photo shows all the mods that I did - well, the ones I remember anyway.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the fuel sender in the 750 tank is not compatible with the gauge on the 550 cluster. I had to build an adapter to make mine work. It was worth the trouble. I think the 550 gauges look way better then the stock 650 ones.

I did some research when trying to find an alterative gauge that will work woth the 750 tank sending unit. I found one automotive gauge that I am using now, but it reads backwards (dammit) so I had to take it apart and re-do the "empty" and "full" labels, so it reads correct now.
I do remember finding one that actually reads in reverse (which is correct for these sending units) but I can't seem to find the site where I seen it.
If your interested in using an after market gauge, find the ohm rating between full and empty, then look for a gauge with that rating.
The only other option is to find another sending unit that will fit into the tank and go with a gauge that works with it, which is a long shot. Good luck!
