I am working on a 83 XJ750 Maxim for a friend. The tach is kind of screwed up. Won't hardly move. When it does it takes a bit to drop back. I have been looking at some on ebay but they are manual whereas mine is electronic. I also want to change the chrome housing because it has quite a bit of road rash on it.
Will the instruments from a XJ650 or XJ550 interchange or parts of it. I want to retain the speedo to keep the mileage correct. I looked for a new housing but it appears that it is discontinued.
I see that some of the others are still available such as the XJ750K. It looks the same in the illustration but a little different part number and I don't want to give over $60 for something that won't fit.
    Thanks, Ed

An 82 650 Maxim Tach should be the same. If you can get ahold of chacal he would know for sure. Drop him a PM and he is real good about getting back. Good Luck

PS he might be able to get your tach repaired and find you a new housing

    Tach Repair
You can repair that tach if it still moves, follow RickCo's guide and see if it helps. It helped mine!!

Thanks for the information. I think I will try a lubricant a bit different than the WD40 though because the WD will evaporated over time. I have some watch oil that I use to lubricate watches and clocks with that will have a much longer lasting effect.
Although, that may not be the best idea either. I will learn more once I get into it. If that doesn't work, I bought another one on ebay last night. Always a day late and a dollar short.
    Thanks again, Ed

Actually I used Expedex Silicone Spray. We use it at work on press equipment. It's heat stable and somewhat of a semi-dry lubricant. It does not evaporate and does not break down over time.
Another one to try is Liquid Wrench or even 3 in 1 oil. I use it rather than WD-40 all the time.

Hmmm, the silicone spray would be an option. You have to be careful about any kind of lubricant that will "Gum" the instrument up, especially in cold weather.

Also another option is the stuff you can buy at Radio Shack.
    Precision Oiler
A nice tool to have for pin-point lubrication.

I picked up one of the precision oilers today from Radio Shack. $3.73 out the door.
