I'm looking for a set of rubber boots that go from the intake to the carbs on my xj 650j. I noticed one of mine being damp after a ride the other day. I am on a budget so I don't have alot to spend on them right now. If you have some laying around let me know.

Do you Mean from the air box to the carbs? They can be replaced with rubber hose. There are several threads covering the modification. If you mean the intake manifolds, from the carbs to the block. That is a different issue.

I am wondering what the relevance of "damp" is. That sounds more like a result rather than a cause. Is the dampness fuel or oil?

I am in need of boots from the intake to the carbs. The dampness I was refering to seems like gas or has a gassy smell to it. When I wipe it, it makes my finger black from the boot and has a gas smell.

How many miles on the bike and have the carbs ever been redone? It sounds to me like you may be ready for carb cleaning and rebuild.

Is there any black smoke during acceleration or when cruising?

The bike has 24xxx miles on it and I have had it for a year or so. Not for sure what all the po had done to it. I cleaned the carbs on it when I got it. The boots are really cracked up and need changing. There is absolutely no black smoke during acceleration or when cruising. The bike runs well and I am getting 43 MPG. I am planning to adjust the valves and do the carbs again after the valve adjustment with one of our wizards on here. I am just waitning on time to get together to do it.

Well, most would suggest that you avoid replacing the carb to intake boots because of the high possibility of snapping those bolts. I would try to remove all the clamps, clean and dry everything real nice, and then put some black rtv all around the four boots and allow 12-24 hours to setup and dry. I've heard of people using pieces of inner-tube on here also. Either way, good luck!
