    Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself and whatnot to this fine forum. Tomorrow I will be the proud owner of a 1981 XJ 550. I'm from upstate NY (Syracuse) and currently own 5 older Japanese bikes ranging in dates from 1972 to 1983. I'm an amateur mechanic and I do mean amateur. The purpose of a sixth bike is to acquire one that is running and just needs a title because I can feel myself losing what I learned last year in the motorcycle safety class licensing course I took-and dammit the weather is too nice to be cooped up in the garage without being able to take a break to go for a ride! So, in short, I'm addicted-and here I am. I've read through the required reading posts and understand that I shouldn't clutter up this place asking for help. I'll be piggybacking already existing threads. I know what a pain moderation can be.

Thanks to the moderators and webmasters for making this possible and I look forward to many a good discussion, be it technical or otherwise.

Take care and I'll post up some pics when I have them!
    Nate

    Welcome to XJBikes nate !
That required reading thing just started yesterday, but I kinda agree-
how many recent posts about dirty carbs, bad fuse boxes, and stuck front calipers have we had? Lots!
Good to see you have a running bike, ride easy until you get the feel of it.

asking for help though IS a major reason this site is so great...

just try to search your subject before you ask. not that it bothers ME any...

    welcome to the site!

I agree with Dave. If you've searched for the solution to your problem and it eludes you then most definitely ask. That's what we're here for.

And welcome aboard. Say goodbye to the wife and kids; this is the beginning of your addiction. ;)

Hello Jack and a hearty welcome to you.
Be sure to read up on our rules posted in the Announcements forum. We don't have too many "procedures" here, so dig in and don't worry too much about "web-equett". Don't take this hard, your new to this.
It is customary to launch your own thread when introducing yourself. Posting on another person's thread off-topic is refered to as "thread-jacking". We'll forgo the usual flogging seeing your "newbie-ness" ;). Onward!
Why are you buying your son's bike? If you were my old man, I'd have given the thing to you! Dad gave up lots of things to see to my needs and wants as a youth, it would be the least I could do to bring some joy to his life. I'm glad your son is keeping it in the family.
Oh yes, we love pictures around here. The more, the better.
