the 1980 doesnt have YCIS. Here is the description
"Very clean classic. 650cc, shaft drive. Now on road and inspected. Starter clutch just went, though. No backup kickstart. I just park it on an incline and roll start it. I have a new starter clutch and shop manual but no free time. My loss, your gain." 27k. He doesnt know when the last time the shaft drive oil was changed (hope PO did yikes) I think I will offer him $550 he wants $700. is that fair? thanks

Freddy, that would depend upon where the bike is located (price varies from region to region). A non-starting (as opposed to non-running) bike in good shape should run about $500 for that age. Your offer is about right as the replacement costs for a starter clutch will run you about $180 or so for parts, gaskets and seals. Then there is the cost of time to repair it. It can be a simple job but it will take a fair amount of time (gotta pull the engine and split the case to replace it. And that assumes that it is the clutch that went south and not the chain or anything else (like a bum starter). I'd shoot at $400 and go from there. What are similar bikes going for around your area? Salvage yards will only give him about $150 for the bike in it's current shape so keep that in mind.

thanks so much. Glad I posted because I didnt know I had to pull the engine. No thanks. Other option is a 82' xj750. not sure if its YCIS yet but owner thinks it is. 44k. He will take less then $500. New fusebox installed only thing it needs in new spedo cable. How long will these engines typically run for assuming they have been cared for and not abused?

Anything 81 and after is YICS.

How long will they run for? Forever if you change the oil regularly.

They are commonly known as the most reliable bikes from that era (80's).
