Is there a trick to putting the rear wheel back on?

I finally got the tire changed on the rear of the bike. I also cleaned and greased everything up. I checked the brakes. Still lots of life left and no indication of delamination. I'll replace them soon, anyway, since I don't know how old they are.

Anyway, I can't get the rear wheel back on. It isn't meshing in with the drive shaft. I get it into the socket, but it won't go all the way in. I've been wiggling, tilting, turning, cursing, tapping with a mallet, and it won't go.

Am I missing something? I've removed the right shock, so it would have plenty of room. Everything is in good shape and position. The tines on the wheel and on the drive shaft are clean and clear. Everything is in good shape.

    Any suggestions?

    Take it back off.
    Lube the Drive Unit's Splines
    Wipe the Wheel Splines.
Use the Axle as a Line-Up Tool.

You're a genius, Rick! Once I got the axle in there, it stopped wiggling around. Then is sort of clunked together.

    Awesome!

You can be a Genius, too.
    Buy a Workshop Manual.

Keep it in the Bathroom for a few weeks.
Flip through the pages while your seated and have the moment to read a page or two.

Pretty soon, ... you'll start hearing.
    (Knock, knock, knock)
"Dad, ... are you done yet?
What the heck are you doing in there?"
