while Im in the idle-tune-sync-learn how to do tis end of it mode, I'm noticing a faint steady ticking sound coming from the top of the engine.
My valves are all in spec. Is this normal or do I have a problem somewhere?

When my bike is idling, I can hear the valves 'ticking' a bit. I think it has been posted here before that it's when you can't hear your valves tapping, it could be a problem.

    Happy ticking=GOOD.

It should sound kind of like 4 industrial sewing machines: whirrr-tick-tick-tick-tick-whirr.

QUIET you need to worry about.

Make sure the bike is FULLY warmed up before carb tuning; take it for a 20-mile ride then come back and get started. Keep one or two of those 19" "box" (window) fans blowing on it.

Cool. I'm a worry wart I guess but thank you. thought I did something wrong along the way and I knew I followed your "valve class" to the letter, and your cam chain adjustment just like you said, and every thing Rick told me to the letter. was wondering what I could have done wrong. I was going to start over! Thanks Fitz

As long as it's a faint, "happy" tick (you'll come to take comfort in it) you want to embrace it. I had a tight valve on the last check, once adjusted it's now at the far end of the spec toward loose, and a happy little tick has returned. Gives me warm fuzzys.

Yeah, a nice steady ticking/soft valve clatter is music to your ears, and like others said.....it's when it get quiet is when you need to worry.
