I strapped a 30 cal plastic ammo can to my back rack to carry some stuff for a long ride the other day. It fit perfectly and was quite functional too.
The looks I got from others on the road was priceless. 8O
Any one else here ever do that or am I committing some sort of biker sacrilege or something?
Are olive drab accessories taboo or just "frugal".
I plan on getting some leather saddlebags eventually but for the time being I'll be milsurping it.

In my book bikers are individuals so if it works for you go with it!

Everyone has their own tastes. It sounds like a great idea, I may copy you...

Mount a gun up front, then see what kind of looks you get ;-)

Here's my bike with my Clampet special RubberMaid top box and ammo can hard cases. I had to paint them silver so I fit in better with my ride buddies on their BMWs

Gives a whole new meaning to hard luggage. I like the functionality and looks like it could hold alot more than standard bags.

There has to be more ingenious luggage solutions out there - let's see some pics. I'm looking for ideas and I'm obviously not as creative as some of the folks out there.

Great_Buffalo - I like your solution. How heavy are the ammo cans - they appear to be metal?

I think the cans weight 7 or 8 lbs. They really aren't that heavy. Yes they do hold alot of crap. I just U-bolted them to the rack frame then put a speader between the two in the back. I can remove them in less than 5 minutes.

    I like your style GB.....
Here's a pic of my solution. My ammo box is the plastic type.
I like your solution alot better though.
Maybe I could paint it super 2A red or something.....

Wow...I wasted about $75 on a trunk and I could have just bought a rubbermade storage box at walmart.

Ah, but the storage box doesn't have a nice backrest built in so I guess it was worth it. OH, and the locking lid is nice too.

I LOVE the water buffalo set up.
I bet you could carry at least three cases of beer on ice for a good road trip.
I doubt I could fit more than a 12pack in mine.

I can fit 3, 12-packs on each side and one and half 24-packs in the box. Yes I have put drinks on ice in the box. I was at Cabela's the other day and saw a stainless ice box in their bargain cave. It would look real good sittin on the back. Just couldn't justify the price, it's no secret how cheap I can be, look at the bike.

I did just spring $100 for mufflers from Dennis Kirk. We'll see this weekend when IU get them on if it was money well spent.

While 600 miles from home in Northern Ontario I found myself in urgent need of extra storage capacity, so my bike was graced by a pair of Canadian Tire $12 bowling bags, converted with duct tape and a utility knife to be saddlebags. Very spacious but on a hard turn they rubbed the wheel

I think in the US I would have been laughed off the road, but it seems to me that in Canada, especially rural Canada, they are more forgiving of, err, less than perfect modifications such as this one. I remember on the 400, headed back to Toronto, I passed, and exchanged awkward glances with the driver of a car, A mid-80s Buick Century IIRC, that had 2 canoes mounted side-by-side above his car on a roof rack made from what appeared to be some 2x4s and bungee straps. I hope he knew that I was staring at him not only out of curiosity but relief that perhaps my luggage arrangements weren't the most rickety and impromptu out there. Maybe.
