I've been slowly Tearing apart my '82 XJ550 maxim, and have a lot of time to reflect on a bad decision I made with it about 10 years ago.

I bought my bike from a gentleman in Cuba City Wisconsin in the spring of 2000. When I purchased the bike it looked like it just rolled off of the showroom floor. It had a little over 8000 miles on it. I bought it from the original owner and he babied it the entire time he had it. After I rode it back to Dubuque IA, I had a local bike mechanic look at it and he said that there were no problems with it at all, and he was very impressed with it's condition given it's age. I was anal retentive with maintenance and care for the bike and in two years time I put another 8000 miles on it.

In the fall of '02 I started Dating this little Red head and man was she hot, the only thing we couldn't come to terms with was the bike. Everyday she would B***h about it saying "Your gonna F****** kill yourself... blah blah blah etc etc etc......" (I'm sure most of you have had at least one similar conversation on your life.) I eventually came up with a plan to please her and keep the bike somewhere I could keep an eye on it. I spent the next few weeks hitting up close friends and family to see if they wanted to buy it on the condition they would sell it back to me if they wanted to get rid of it. One of my cousins had found out that I was trying to sell it and started bugging me about selling it to him. I tried to ignore him and blow him off because I knew he wasn't responsible enough to take the same care of her as I was. Eventually though when no one else I knew would buy it, I broke down and sold her to him anyway.... A few weeks after buying it, he fried the IC igniter and stuffed it in a shed. I kept asking him when he was going to fix it but he kept saying he would as soon as he found the part. I got frustrated showed him where to buy the part and then he said i don't have the money. I bought the part gave it too him and he said he would install it but he never did. Eventually he said he lost the IC igniter. I asked to uy it back he refused, It got to the point I was begging but he refused to sell it. Finally about 2 months ago and a decade of sitting under a lean to he grudgingly agreed to sell it back to me.

Most of the rust cleaned off, but I need to replace the mufflers, the tires, the carbs, need to be rebuilt, the clutch needs to be replaced, I'm going to replace the Jets.. and the list goes on and on.

I feel horrible I did a great injustice to her all because I couldn't just tell the GF to shut up and deal with the fact I owned a motorcycle.

Lessons learned i guess, but it sucks the motorcycle had to pay the ultimate price of that lesson.

Hopefully it cost you less than she did.

    Good luck.

Are you even with her anymore? :) You need to kick your cousin's teeth in. Sounds like that one relative that we all have, lol. Anyways, let us know if you need anything and maybe we can get her back up and running like she deserves!

She wouldn't go for him, honestly she was pretty snobby, and far better looking than I will ever have again. Her entire family was pretty high society. I'll never really understand what she saw in me. But she was almost as fun to ride as my bike was. I finally broke up with her because she refused to ever have kids and so we went our separate ways.

I'm just glad The motor on the motorcycle still turns over.

She was a natural red head but most of the time she had her dyed some other color. She was a self hating ginger.

Sometimes we make the wrong decisions. Young, dumb and full of c......the wrong information. That's seems to be a lesson you only have to learn once. "I come with a couple of motorcycles, any questions?" Good, get on, sit down, shut up, and hang on!!

I would NEVER get rid of a bike over a female! Most females at age 30 do not look or perform as well as these old XJ's. Plus a motorcycle doesn't get mad if you ride someone else's motorcycle.

Been with my lady since 1973. She has supported me through all my phases. You just have to choose wisely. I just had opportunity to repay her. She was diagnosed with kidney cancer and on Thursday the kidney was removed. All seems fine. No radiation or chemo required. I am spending time helping her for a change.

We were going to take a few trips on the bike, but that will have to wait 'till next year.
