Just bought an 85 maxim x parts bike for $75.00 Former owner bought it 3 years ago wanted to make a bobber out of it.cut the frame and then figured out he has no clue how it goes back together. Looks like its all there in boxes. Including carbs pipes ect. Gonna finish pulling it apart so i have spares and hopefully some parts i might need for mine. Gas tank has no dents. It was dark when i got home so could not take any pics. Will tomorrow and inventory everything could not go wrong for the price.

Looks like you beat me. The last Maxim X parts bike I got for a measly $100, and I thought that was a deal.

Hopefully the boxes have most of the hard to find parts, and as you know, it will be nice to have lots of spares hanging around just in case.

Went out in the dark took a quick look 18k miles has the factory sissy bar needs a cover split behind the foam. 5 valve covers look ok has the computer. Bike is a dark blue not sure if its original paint or not. Motor turns with a wrench. Giving me more incentive to finish mine this winter Have plenty of parts 4 Allen bolts and motor will be out. Pull the computer and wheels. Will check valve clearances and do a compression check. For some reason if mine does not turn over will have a spare motor.
when i was polishing my forks on mine there was a tiny hole weeping in the fork leg did not leak til i stripped the clear with chemical stripper. Was a shame they had new seals. I threw a set of virago forks on it when you put the weight of the bike on them after a few weeks seals started to pour so i will put new seals in these and use them

18K is not bad. Definitely check the valve clearances while it's out.

If it's the original dark blue, it probably has the silver "Yamaha" tank badges. And if it does, they could be worth as much as you paid for the bike (maybe even more) because they're so hard to find.

Sounds like you scored big time.

I'm not an "X" guy by any stretch, but aren't those "Five-Valve" shields about as rare as the little air scoops on the 900 Seca? As in, those alone are worth more than what you paid?

Cutlass, I'll say it again, you definitely scored big on that deal.

You're right Fitz, if you add up all the specific parts unique to the X, it would cost you a bundle if you needed them. That's if you can even find them like the "5-Valve" carb trim covers you mentioned.

I once did a 14hr round trip (in one day) to pick up a non-running, no title X for a parts bike specifically because it had the carbs and all the trim. Cost me almost as much in gas, tolls, and the trailer rental as it did for the $200 I paid for the bike. Still have the 700cc engine from that one which is ready to install when I decide to do a complete rebuild on the Canadian spec 750cc mill.

I keep looking for other X's that come up for sale, hoping to score another parts bike that will help replenish my stock of the hard to find stuff.
