Ok guys my search for a replacement motor is finally over. I went to the local salvage yard today and picked up a 82ish seca yics 750 motor, carbs and exhaust. Spent $400 but I fig it wasnt to bad a deal? Eh but I'm not sure. So I'm gonna put it in prob this winter or until my tranny gives out. If you have any pointers to doing the change go ahead and send them. Thanx and wish me luck

The TCI unit may be different.

    $400 seems fine.

It is best to have 2 or 3 people to help with lifting the motor out and back in again, from the right side of the bike. The shaft bolts are fun to "break", get someone sitting on the bike in gear with the rear brake engaged. Oil filter cover off or it will not clear the frame.

    Good luck!

Yeah, might be a slightly different ignition curve, more advance maybe, will not stop the motor going though.

Post the first 3 letters/numbers stamped by the clutch leaver on the motor here.

Ok it seems it's a 81 xj750rk. Is that a good thing? What is the diff between them. I am assuming it is a seca motor as I was told by the owner of the yard.

I don't know the difference between these engine models, I have an 82 model and all I know is hang on when you crack the throttle.

I would suggest you find and use a 750 TCI.

Got a ? bout the 750's performance. How does it do against a 650. And can you bring it up in 2nd? My 650 would come up in 1st but now way in 2nd. Just hoping for more power.

I don't try to "bring it up" assuming you mean a "wheelie".
I know of one XJ650 in the next town but haven't gone riding with him to see how these bikes perform.
I had a bit of "fun" with a Mustang and was very pleased with my bikes performance.
