Pics in later post. CL Listing deleted after I bought the Maxim.

I'm considering this to replace the '81 Seca 750 that I gave to my Son.

I've been riding a 2000 Katana but it's just not the right bike for me. I also have an '82 Suzuki GS850L bagger in the re-assembly phase right now, but I want a nice "Around Town" ride.

I'm thinking of pulling the Vetter off of the Maxim and putting it on the GS which just has a SlipStreamer wind screen now.

$950 seems a little high to me but it looks like the Vetter fairings are going for around $130.00 + mounting kit, so it may be a wash in that regard.

I'm going to take a look at it later today hopefully.

Re: '82 Maxim 750 on craigslist

So, I went to look at the above Maxim this afternoon. It's in good condition. Not great but good. No major rust, a little surface rust on the tank and chrome, but the inside of the tank is very clean.

It has the full Vetter luggage kit as well as the Wind Jammer fairing, uninstalled but complete.

It started right up but he said it always needs just a little choke to idle. The front calipers are badly in need of a rebuild and were almost locked. I was able to ride it a bit though I did not trust the front brakes enough to go at any speed. It shifted from 1st to 2nd and then 3rd smoothly and downshifted smoothly as well.

The intake boots look brand new and it has the stock air box and exhaust. the exhaust headers are a little rusty in spots. I did not inspect the collector closely but it sounded solid, no leaks.

I made an offer and he accepted! I'll be picking it up later this week. I hope I'll be accepted back into the XJ fold!

I don't plan on installing the baggage so it'll be up for sale if anyone is interested. Ill get some pics of everything up when I get her home.

    That looks like a great buy.....I have had mine ( '82 XJ750J Maxim ) since '82......you will defintiely enjoy this bike.....great handlebar setup.....bought mine in '82 for $ 2,850.00......

That bike looks like it is in good condition.....rust in spots you described can be taken care of easily......caliper can be rebuilt....no problem...tank can be repainted....but it looks good in the pic overall......clean inside the tank is a definite plus.......Congrats on your purchase & welcome......

    Advise is always free here....

Everyone out here in SoCal thinks they have a gem & wants top buck when selling their bikes...

So what was your offer ????

I don't NEED more vetter fairings / luggage but if you don't reuse the fairing mount I might be interested in it (espeically if it came with the christmas tree shaped support piece that the XJ750Js are suppose to use).

Has the rear fender been painted?

Looks like a decent bike for the money, really depends on your market too, some places that would be a ripoff and others it would be a steal. Glad to hear you're an XJ owner once again and I know you're looking forward to all the fun that your future holds now getting her back into prime shape!

    Have a blast!

Re: '82 Maxim 750 on craigslist

The rear fender is chrome, it does look black in the CL photo though, doesn't it!

I picked her up yesterday. I bled the pressure of of the front brakes and adjusted the rear brakes. I kept to the back roads and had a very nice ride!

I've removed the Vetter Windjammer and the harnesses for it and the bag kit, which was not installed, and made some adjustments to the handle bars. Is it just me or do all of the '80s Nippon bikes have handle bar geometry designed to break the rider's wrists?

Can anybody tell me where the horns are supposed to be mounted? The Seca had them inside the light assembly. These were mounted to the vetter bracket assembly.

Next I'll pull the calipers for a rebuild and new lines.

I've got a stock headlight assembly, aux. light and front indicator mounts coming later this week.

I'm putting the Bag kit and Windjammer mounting bracket up for sale on the trade/sell page here before I list on CL or fleabay.

Some pics before I tore into her.

The horns on my bike are mounted under the tank, directly above the valve cover. You have to remove the horns in order to get the valve cover off.

    Nice bike by the way.

I re mounted the horns, rebuilt the calipers and installed a stock head lamp and front indicators(they're from a Seca though) today. The Aux lamp I got is missing some parts so I'm on a mission, "Fab or Find!"

I have to get new brake lines made up and pull the cam cover to check valve clearances next.

BTW, here's my other current project:

This is where the Vetter WindJamer is going.
