I have just joined this great looking site.

I am in Vancouver, BC, and I am in the process of getting collector plates for a 1982 Maxim 650.

My maxim was the first bike I ever owned. I bought it in 1993. I gave it away 5 or 6 years ago to a guy who wanted to rebuild it with his daughter. I had stopped riding it - life had gotten in the way. I got a call out of the blue a little while back, asking if I wanted my bike back (now that it has been restored). I jumped at the chance.

Things have changed since I last had my maxim. Marriage. Kids. Motorcycle forums dedicated to xj bikes. But I am stoked my first motorcycle will soon be mine again. Looking forward to using this site.

Thanks for the welcome. Here are a couple recent pics from the previous owner that I am using to get the collector plates.

Obviously the bags are not stock. I prefer it naked.

Well you shouldn't have any trouble getting collector plates-looks great!

I think I'll go polish the rust on my bike now :(

Markie - here in British Columbia, we only have one insurance agency (ICBC). They have various categories of insurance, one of them being "collector" status.

In this category, your vehicle has to be 25 years old, or older (check), and maintained/restored to a collectible level (IMO, check). You apply, with pictures, and if you get approved, your annual insurance rate is much lower (a fraction) of the normal cost. There are restrictions on use (no driving to work or school). Pleasure use only, which is fine by me.

    I await my plates...fingers crossed.

More info can be found here if you are interested:

Hi, thanks for that. It sounds a good idea if it works out cheaper for you.

In the UK there are lots of different insurance companies and some do offer "Classic" insurance for bikes over 25 years. I think they come with mileage restrictions.

All bikes over 3 years old have to pass the dreaded "MOT" (Ministry of transport) annual test.

My bike is preparing herself for this (Leaky fork seal and play in the swing arm linkages, both "Fail" items).

My Third party, fire and theft insurance is only £80 ($110?) as I am "Mature"!!! that's what they think anyway.
