:( Yesterday I changed the oil, filter & plugs. Rode it for about 20 minutes, and then rode it to the garage, turned it off. ( ... and then told my brother about how nice it runs again)
This morning I went to the garage, and it wouldn't start. After trying for a few minutes, I just sat there (with the ignition on still) and it back fired, so I tried again, but .... nothing.
    Any ideas???
It's an '82 Maxim 550, low miles, and well cared for.

I'd start by checking for spark at the plugs. The backfire indicates that it's probably getting fuel, and getting air is assumed. That leaves spark.

Check it and let us know if you're getting spark.

    My first question is:

Do you have an updated Fuse Panel?

    But maybe not enough.

Last fall after I mothballed the 650 we got an unusual warm spell, decided it needed to hit the asphalt.

Ran perfectly when I put it away, could only get it to backfire.

After about an hour of messing with it I remembered I'd disconnected the cable for the "choke" in anticipation of pulling the carbs. After putting the cable back on it fired right up.

How is the battery? Mine gives me trouble in the morning, too cold and needs replaced. If it somewhat warm out, no prob. If it is your battery, that is an indication that it probably needs to be replaced.

    It's freezin'!
I KNOW my bike is Tuned-up and ready-to-go!

But, it won't start. It's just too cold.
Maybe it's telling me that it's too damn cold out to go for any lame ride and freeze my butt off.

Once I got it running ... after goosing-it with a bit of Starting Fluid ... I got it running nice, down in the garage ... and warmed it up ... and didn't have the garage door open enough ... and tripped a CO-Detector outside the Master Bedroom.

That set the dog to howling and got everybody P-O'ed at me for having to see if I could get the bike to start so late inn the evening.

Tough to make these bikes go when it freezing outside!
