I fixed a Maxim 550 a few weeks back and the owner didn't want to sell me it!
Anyway, last week, he calls me wanting to sell!
So, I now own it, 1981 with just short of 4K on it!!
I'm actually a strong Suzuki GS man, but I couldn't resist this XJ!
Never could afford one growing up in UK, had to settle for the GS550 instead!
    Phil.

Hi Phil and welcome, It's a great site, and i hope you feel at home here with your new XJ brothers. I just rebuilt mine, but without the help i got from the forum the bike would have cost twice as much to put back together.

We have a great parts guy here goes by the name chacal and everything you need can be found in the Link

Have a trawl through the forum pages, most likely your question may lurk in the archives, but we are always ready to have a laugh or grimace at your failures or share in your joy if you post.. :)

Having already fixed a XJ550 you could be inundated with some questions yourself.

    Cheers, Rob..

Welcome Phil. A low mileage bike for sure. Less than 4k in 29years ain't bad :)

Welcome Phil! So, where in LA are you located? I'm in Houma. Maybe we could hook up for a ride some day.

How are you doing and welcome.

There's alot of knowledgable friendly people on this website who can save you alot of time by explaining in detail how to fix things right the first time, due to their experience.

I am finishing up putting an xj650 together and even the manual didn't provide the help the forums have on here.

    Welcome again.

    Thanks for the welcome guys...
Been fixing 80's Jap bikes for about 25 years now, and restoring them too.
    I recently finished a $5K restoration on a 85 Yamaha RZ 350, before that a 81 GS1000 and last month finished a 1983 Katana 1100 (yes I have pics too)
When the 550 got dropped off at my house it was a non runner, the usual carbs stopped up, dead battery (10 years old) tires dry rotted, cables froze, the usual from a bike standing.
I WARNED him once I fix it DON'T ride it due to the tyres (yes I'm English, not tires, lol) being dry rotted.
So, I got the carbs stripped, cleaned etc etc, got it running, rode it up the street, ran fine.
Gave it back, the Dumba** rode it and got scared when it began sliding on a curve, he brought it back 3 weeks later and wanted to sell!
    Hence, I own it now........
Will post pics soon (I'm at work, and photobucket access denied at work!)
    Phil.
