OK here's a noobie question for you guys. What is the bolt for on the back of the mufflers on the Maxim 750? Is it for adjusting baffles or something? As far as I know it is the stock exhaust. Thanks.

Precisely! Got to start somewhere and you are starting out in the right way in the right place. Asking questions of folks who own and love their XJs!

Now if you really want to wake up the neighbors, Just point the back end of the bike out of the garage and take those little old baffles out. Now look around, anyone looking? Crank that critter up and wind her up to about 4 or 5k bteer yet hit 6 to 7k and wake them all up. Loud little bike aint she. Now shut her down and push her into the garage really quick, Johnny law should be coming really soon. Dont forget to put those baffles back in and look really innicent when he come a knocking.
Welcome to the site. Lots of good info around here. Great people.

Sounds like a great idea! Most of my neighbors are a--holes anyway. But unfortunately I live on a military base so I'd have way too much explaining to do. But hey I'm leaving soon so I may do it on my last day here just to give 'em something to remember me by. Thanks guys. I'm sure I'll have more noobie questions soon.

I'm into "don't be a putz to your neighbors" theory, goes like this:
Don't do things that would add to the list of stupid things bike riders do, we have an image that needs work because of stupid things like firing up an uncorked pipe at 1 a.m.
Fortunately I didn't live on base very long but for the time I was there, the Golden Rule applied, even if I didn't like the boobs. Had a lot of creepy shipmates disregard any consideration and just act like animals in the barracks. Base housing wasn't much better.
Just remember, do unto others... You'll be glad you did later.

Don't be concerned with how much noise you can get it to make.

Keep your eye on the prize and see how good you can get it to run!

Yeah, I know it wouldn't be the right thing to do, but sometimes it makes me feel better to just say I'm gonna do it. I've got a neighbor with a Harley that just loves to sit around drinking beer and gunning his motor after he's too drunk ride. And he's got straight pipes on it. That's freakin loud! Don't worry guys, I've got a little more "home training" than he does. I'm not looking for noise, I kinda like the mellow stuff since I'm just learning to ride. Or maybe it's just old age!

I wouldn't mind making mine sound a little more rumbly instead of so much like a sports bike. Just get a sound about like you get out of a dual exhaust on a car.

ditto.. I don't really know my neighbors (my property butts up against 7 others because of a weird side street route), I just see them when I'm out mowing the lawn or something, and we say hey and go about our business. But its not good to burn bridges.. Especially because there's been a rash of burglaries within a couple blocks of me.. Its nice knowing that I haven't been THAT neighbor, and one of them sees someone sneaking around in my yard, it's going to get reported instead of ignored because I'm a pain in the ass and deserve to get robbed.. :)

Anyways.. I'm with donkris.. I want my bike to have a nice rumble but not be obnoxiously loud. I'm just not into the sport bike sound (especially because this isnt a sport bike -- in my mind anyway).. Can the baffles be modified to change the tone without making them real loud?

Yes they can. The baffles in my left muffler ar starting to deteriorate and it is actually sounding pretty decent right now (though not too loud). Eventually I'll need a new exhaust though

If you could get in there and make some holes in the baffling the sound would change.
