Key mechanism, I am about to give up!

    When disassembling my bike, I took off the key relay... Accidentally I disassembled it to the point where everything fell out. I know how it goes back together and have attempted reassembly 50+times.

    I am unable to get the key to turn in the mechanism and have no clue why it won't budge. The key goes in fine, but will not turn and if I have the entire thing together I can't get the key out, I have to disassemble everything.

    I was planning on bypassing the key system to a finger print scanner when I reassemble so this isn't a ride or die issue, but it is really pi$$ing me off!

    Has anyone run into this issue before, what am I missing, how did I mess this up, should I throw the entire unit into the lake before it freezes and never think of it again?!

    As always thank you for your help... it keeps me sane during the long days in the garage!

    Kinda hard to troubleshoot without seeing how far you took it apart.

    Did you remove the piece that holds the wafers/springs where the key goes in?

    Did you take the pins(wafers/springs) out of the lock cylinder? If so are they in the right place to allow the key to turn? Take the lock cylinder ot again and put the key in. Look at the pins they should all be straight and even with the cylinder.

    Here is where I am at... I may sound like an idiot, but I am not sure what the wafers or springs are. I have always prided myself on being able to put things I took apart back together... so I am befuddled right now!

    I just can't believe I have no clue how to get this back together, in a working fashion!

    Well if you did not take it apart any further than that you did not mess with the pins in the lock cylinder.
    With it apart like that will the key go in and turn? Maybe some lube in there will help. Look closley to see if any of the springs under the copper contacts came loose and is binding when the lock is turned.

    They key will go in and everything will turn.... as long as I haven't tried to up any of the parts together! everything turns and seems to work until I put the final piece (the silver piece) on... It seems as there is too much pressure to turn the key.


    GRRRRRRRRRRRR................this is frustrating!

    I just took apart a spare lock for my 1100, it is similar but not the same. I don't know what order that one goes together. Its got to be something simple.

    There is a chance the base plate was dislodged and could be the problem... I agree mlew, it is usually something simple. I just keep reminding myself of my favorite manager's favorite phrase:

    "Just KISS it, Keep It Simple Stupid!"

    Well it took my friend all of 2 minutes to fix my issue, the base plate was misaligned by 1/16 of an inch causing the plates not to rotate properly...

    Why didn't it seem so easy when I was working on it?!

    As a 15 year Boy Scout leader , I hear KISS all the time and live by it. Some times it helps to put a agravating project down for awhile and come back to it later. I do it sometimes, when I come back it seems to go back together. Giving the old gray matter a rest sure does help.
