I have never owned a bike before.... so this may be a VERY basic question.

when I turn the key to the ON position, the key can still be removed. the lights remain on; you can even start the bike, and drive away. of course when you can't turn off the headlight without the keys.

is this normal? or is some kind of key locking mechanism broken in my ignition?

    Its a 1983 XJ900RK

    Not normal.
First thing to try is spraying a shot of WD-40 right on your Key and working the Lube into the Ket Slot.

I recently had my Ignition Switch fail.
A new Ignition Switch was in the neighborhood of $42.00

The Headlight and Fairing come off letting Rubber Spacers, Gromet Bushing and Flat Washers loose to fall-out all over the place before you get a chance to see how they are stacked.
I just Elmer glued the ones that surround plastic right in place.
Same for ones used as dampening.
