Can someone tell me the differences in how my Xj650 would react with carburators running lean verses rich?

Do a search for plug chops.
It will tell you if your rich or lean.

If they're running lean, generally the bike is harder to start, runs quite a bit hotter, can miss, if it's lean enough, it can blast (weld) a hole in the middle of the piston.

It's generally the worst side of the lean/rich scale. Running rich won't seize your engine :)

Lean also makes more power than rich, but you sacrifice the power to save your engine.

Running just a TOUCH rich is generally good, cause you get better combustion, the more volume of gas cools the engine, easier starts, runs better (no misses)

Running VERY rich can be bad, because you're wasteing fuel (bad fuel economy) carbon deposits form more abundantly, it's bad for the environment (emmisions). Rich = not as much power as an optimally adjusted mixture.

I see in your sig you're running 4 into 1 exhaust, this type of configuration will make your bike breathe better, or create better air flow, which usually means you're gunna be running lean. This may mean you have to adjust your pilot mixture, or it may mean you have to rejet your carbs.

I'm sure some others will add to these points :)

I'm actually running 4 into 2 exhaust. Also I'm going to check out the plug chops issue to see for sure, but, I think I'm running a bit rich.
