My XJ had clearly been idling lean. Plugs looked new out of box after idling no matter how far I opened pilot screws. I got into it the other day and realized my floats were WAY low. Somehow I got them wrong when I set them up on the bench.

After measuring the floats with the bike running, and adjusting twice I got them to where I get a nice covering of soot after a long idle.

    That's not the point though.....

Yesterday after finishing them up I took off. Got out onto the main drag and the bike started sputtering and bucking. I barely got pulled of into a side street before it died.

As I sat there humiliated and wondering what I'd done wrong with all those hours of work something occurred to me. Had I used up all the gas running it on the center stand?

    Welcome to the Club.

I couldn't get a bike that was being tuned to start after shutting it down to check the plugs.

The Aux Tuning tank was dry as a bone.
