So for those in good ol' Merica can you tell me if it's legal to turn left on red if the road you're turning onto is one-way in that direction.

I know this is legal in Texas but most drivers don't seem to know it. In Austin there are three places I would regularly see people just sitting there waiting for the light to change when there was no cross-traffic.

It depends on the state. In most states that allow a left turn on red; both the street you are turning from, and the street you are turning onto, have to be one-way streets.

Here's an anecdote by way of comparison. I regularly have to wait to turn left at green lights because the driver ahead of me is stopped, waiting for the green arrow even though there is no oncoming traffic.

If the ahead signal is green but the left turn is controlled and the left turn arrow is red, it is illegal to make a left turn (at least in Wisconsin). Almost found out the hard way . . . got away with a warning.

Here the left turn is only protected on a green arrow, but you can turn left on any green.

In Washington, freeway on-ramps are considered one-way streets for the purposes of the left turn on red law. The following states and territories ban left turns on red: South Dakota (unless permitted by local ordinance), Connecticut, Maine, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, the District of Columbia, and Guam.

In NY, it is legal the make a left on red as long as both the street you are on AND the street you turn on to are One-way

Do people generally know it and do it though?

I do, and I've seen a few others who know. Right on red from double-lane to double-lane ( outside lanes) is also legal unless a sign specifically prohibits right-on-red
